Becoming a New York Claims Adjuster can be an appealing profession that can be quite lucrative. But before you can begin working as an Insurance Adjuster, you must first obtain your NY Insurance Adjuster License.

What Does A New York Claims Adjuster Do?An Adjuster inspects property damage or personal injury claims in New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, Schenectady, and throughout Long Island to determine how much the insurance company should pay for the loss. They might inspect a home, a business, or a vehicle to determine how much the insurance company should pay out.
Though the process for reviewing a home versus a car claim may very somewhat, to determine the amount of payout, an Adjuster might interview the claimant and/or witnesses, inspect the damaged property, do additional research such as look at photos, police reports, or doctor/hospital records, evaluate damage, ascertain payout amount, and communicate with the insurance agent and/or client. Typically, adjusters will:
- Verify an insurance policy exists for the insured person and/or property
- Identify coverages for which the insured is covered
- Evaluate the covered injuries and/or damages
- Complete applicable paperwork
- Negotiate a settlement according to the applicable laws
New York Insurance Claims Adjuster License OptionsTo become an insurance claims adjuster in New York, you will first have to decide what type of insurance adjuster you want to be as there are many lines for an adjuster license in New York, each with a different insurance adjuster exam:
- Independent Automobile Insurance Adjuster
- Independent Fire Adjuster
- Independent General Adjuster
If you want to become licensed for more than one line, you will have to take each test separately. Additionally, you must hold an adjuster license and an auto appraiser license to handle auto claims from start to finish in New York.
You can schedule your test with PSI Exams online for a $33 fee. On the day of the exam, arrive on time with a valid photo I.D. If you obtain a 70 percent score or greater, you pass. New York Adjuster License Requirements: - Never have committed a felony or any crime involving fraudulent or dishonest practices
- Provide a $1,000 bond to cover the licensing period
- Pass the NY state exam administered by PSI Testing Centers
- Complete the New York Insurance Adjuster License application and submit with applicable fees
- Submit fingerprints and undergo basic background check
- No Continuing Education is required
