How To Get An Insurance License
Interested in how to get an insurance license? We can help. Simply follow the steps below for specifics on how to get an insurance license.
Step 1: Determine Which License Type You PreferYou can choose to earn a license for
Life & Health insurance,
Property & Casualty insurance, or an
Adjuster license.
Essentially, states require that you:
- a) Have the applicable license type in order to be able to sell insurance or service claims, and
- b) Pass your state's pre-licensing course
Step 2: Select The Applicable Insurance Pre-Licending CourseListed below are the links for your state's pre-licensing courses for each license type. Simply click the applicable state to see info on that state's pre-licensing requirements, as well as the best-selling pre-licensing courses for that state.
Step 3: Study For Your State ExamMost states offer self-study and instructor-led pre-licensing course formats. Each format provides the same content, including numerous sample exam questions.
The primary difference between the two formats is that the self-study format means you do all the work yourself, whereas the instructor-led format typically provides two days of instructor lecture in both live and recorded options.
The recorded function works best for those individuals who either work full-time and/or cannot attend the lectures at the scheduled times. In that case, you can simply view the recording of the lecture. Regardless of which format you choose, make sure you take as many of the sample exam questions provided with your course, as these sample exams provide a good measure of your knowledge and your ability to pass your state's exam.
Step 4: Pass The Exam And Affiliated RequirementsOnce you have completed your pre-licensing course, taken several of the sample exams, and feel that you are ready to take the state licensing exam, simply schedule your exam with your state's designated testing center. For your convenience, we provide the contact information for both your state's insurance licensing department and its testing center on the bottom of our state licensing pages (the same page that shows the recommended courses).
Be aware that you typically will be required to pass a background check, meet minimum age requirements, etc. before the state will issue your license.
