What A Colorado Insurance License Allows You To Do
What Does A Life And Health Agent Do?A Life And Health (L&H) Insurance Agent (in some states, also known as "Life, Health, And Accident) sells Life, Disability, Long Term Care, Medicare, and other policies to groups and individuals in Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, and other cities in Colorado.
As a Life & Health Agent, you advise clients on what policies best suit their needs, tailor policies to fit their requirements, and help customers when they have questions or file a claim.
Ideally, the relationship with your clients will be a long-term one, so you should stay current on your customers' needs, including adding or lowering coverage levels as people age or acquire more wealth or have changing needs.
What Does A Property And Casualty Agent Do?A Property And Casualty (P&C) Insurance Agent sells policies on homes, apartments, vehicles, and other items that cover liability for property damage or injuries to visitors injured on your property. As a P&C Agent, you advise clients on what policies best suit their needs, tailor policies to fit their requirements, and help customers when they file a claim.
What Does An Insurance Adjuster Do?An Adjuster inspects property damage or personal injury claims to determine how much the insurance company should pay for the loss. They might inspect a home, a business, or a vehicle, then analyze the situation, talk to witnesses, do research and otherwise investigate to make sure the claim is legitimate and the claimant gets a settlement that is fair based on the parameters of their policy.

How To Get Your Insurance License In Colorado
Step 1: Fulfill Your Pre-License Education RequirementsThe first step in getting a Colorado insurance license is taking pre-license education courses. These are state-required courses pertaining to the subject matter that will be on the license exam. To fill the pre-license requirement, you must complete a certain amount of credit hours depending on the lines of authority (types of licenses) you wish to attain. The pre-license education requirements for each line are as follows:
- Life: 50 hours
- Health: 50 hours
- Property: 50 hours
- Casualty: 50 hours
You must also complete 10 hours in the following subjects once (not per line):
- Principals of Insurance: 3 hours
- Legal Concepts and Regulations: 4 hours
- Ethics: 3 hours
This means if you are going to get all four lines, you will need two hundred ten 210 hours of education prior to testing.
Step 2: Insurance License ExamsThe next step after completing all of your pre-license coursework is to take the insurance exam. You will take one exam for each line of insurance you wish to carry. Life, Accident, & Health (LA&H) and Property & Casualty (P&C) are a total of four lines. Pearson Vue in Colorado offers these four exams in two "back to back" exams, so you will essentially take four tests, but if you pass them on your first try, you will only have to sit for exams twice. This option does not shorten the exams, but it does allow you to save the fee for one exam sitting.
You must pass your exams within one year of completing your pre-license education course. Colorado offers what is called "partial pass" for these exams. This means that if you take one of the exams and pass one part, but not the other, you will receive a waiver for the parts that you have passed on the next attempt at the exam.
What Are The Requirements For Becoming An Insurance Agent?Generally speaking, to become a licensed insurance agent in your state you must first meet any basic state requirements such as age, passing a background check, etc. You then must take any state-required pre-licensing courses and pass your state's licensing exam to be licensed and able to sell insurance in your state.
